Gynaecology

A gynaecologist is a doctor specialised in women’s health. A gynaecologist is a surgeon who is trained in all aspects of the female reproductive system. There are many components to gynaecology and in Melbourne there are subspecialists in this discipline of medicine. For example, some gynaecologists are experts in urinary incontinence and prolapse of the pelvic organs – they are known as urogynaecologists.

Dr Lenore Ellett spent two years sub-specialising in minimally invasive gynaecology. This is where the surgeon uses a laparoscope (telescope through the belly button) to treat pelvic disorders such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pain  and endometriosis. Minimally invasive gynaecology has undergone great changes over the past few decades. These changes have enabled gynaecologists to perform difficult operations such as hysterectomy using minimally invasive techniques. Dr Lenore Ellett is trained in these techniques.
